I-Tjing

Encountering the Self with the I Ching

The Eastern mind looks at the whole and accepts it as it is, while the Western mind divides the whole into entities. “For example, someone looks at the collection of people here and says, ‘Where do they come from? Why have they gathered together?’ That doesn’t interest the Eastern mind in the least. It says, ‘What does it mean that these people are gathered here?’ And that’s no problem for the Westerner. The Western is  interested in what you came here for, and what you’re doing here. Not so the Eastern mind; it’s interested in togetherness or wholeness as such,” according to C.G. Jung.

The I Ching is a Chinese oracle book; it is believed to be over 4,000 years old. As with every oracle method, the I Ching’s effect can be traced back to the concept of synchronicity. The moment the question is asked coincides with the answer. The book consists of 64 codes or hexagrams, each accompanied by extensive texts. These texts were not written down all at once, but were supplemented and developed over the years. Jung saw an archetypal image in each hexagram. The book is called “the book of change” because each hexagram, at a certain point, transforms into another hexagram; nothing is fixed; there is always movement or transformation.

Using the I Ching:

In an I Ching session, I work with three coins, each with a yin and yang side. By tossing the coins two times three times, two hexagrams are created. The meaning of the hexagrams and of both individual images are stated in the I Ching. We will review these texts and focus on the experience the words of the text have on you.

The question:
How to ask the question is important. It’s best to leave it open-ended. The I Ching doesn’t offer a yes or no answer, but rather a description of the archetypal image associated with it, with all its nuances. Don’t ask the question too generally; make it as specific as possible.
